Sean Seymour founded 358 Studios in 2014 because he loves being able to give back to future generations through photography and his sense of humor. The “Gift of Photography” is something that is underrated until you see an image 20 years later and catch yourself saying, “Aww, that’s awesome!”
In 2015, Sean opened a 3,000 sqft studio in the NorCal area. The studio did over 200+ shoots per year. In 2021, Sean closed that facility due to covid-19 and moved to the SoCal area. Tired of California’s high cost of living, Sean relocated to the Phoenix area. Another studio may be in the works soon, but for now, Sean and his professional equipment is mobile. He’ll come to you.
Sean started shooting B&W in high school while working on the school paper.
My teacher wasn't a photographer, but she gave me the resources to practice photography. She made the mistake of telling me, “You can have as much free film as you're willing to develop, process, and book."
Big mistake (or not)? A few years and several thousands of rolls of film later, Sean and another photography named Sean (funny) had filled every three-ring binder in the school with images. In those days, film strips were put into a clear holder and added to a 3-ring binder. Like a piece of paper, only every sheet in the 3-ring binder was a roll of film. Even today, Sean still sees some of his high school images popping up on Facebook and other social media sites.
Following his passion, in 1987 Sean started assisting at a local studio, Kent Peterson Photography. Kent’s work was mostly still-life photography for the University of Oregon, department stores, and magazines. Like 358 Studios, Kent had a 32’ wide white seamless sweep background. While assisting Kent, Sean learned not to be afraid of the dark (as in pitch black, can’t see your hand in front of your face dark), how to load and use large format 4x5 cameras, medium format 120mm cameras, and just how cool working with strobes and slide film could be. This time at Kent’s studio really sealed the deal for Sean wanting to open his own studio. 15 years later, that’s exactly what Sean did.
As a basketball player and all-around athlete, Sean naturally gravitated towards sports photography.
I love trying anything creative. I wish I could dedicate half a day to just one athlete. Even though the Internet is full of photographers nowadays shooting this style, there’s only a handful of us that have been doing it for 20 years or more. Back then everything was so bland, with no emotion or personality. What I really enjoy, is that every one of my shoots and every athlete has their own personality and style. The young adults and kids that I work with are so fun and mostly... very unpredictable. I feel privileged to be at the other end of the camera when their true personalities shine through. I never get tired of a parent telling me, “How did you do that? These pictures capture all of their personality. I try, but I never get that in my photos!”
By the end of your experience with Sean and 358 Studios, our mission is to do a great job for you and your family, that you had a blast, and that these images survive for years to come.
Maybe 30 years from now one of these athletes will be sitting around looking at these images with their kids, saying, “Wow, look at me in this picture! Isn’t this cool?"
Although, Sean started out with sports photography, his still-life and portrait experience has allowed him to expand the client base for 358 Studios. Now located in the Phoenix, Arizona area Sean is ready. Let’s shoot!
